Sweet, Sweet Wine (with Dan Bern)

Dan Bern joined the cavalcade of guest singers on these live sessions stopping by the downtown LA studios to lend his voice to this song about a frustrating conversation I had with a friend about the striking workers at Canter’s. She was an A&R person for Electra who was into us and then…she wasn’t.

“Sweet, Sweet Wine” didn’t make the record, and maybe it should have. That’s a killer chorus with Dan’s harmonies but at the time it felt a little too sloppy. Considering the overall ramshackle quality of the album, it probably could have fit in just fine.

Lyrics

SWEET, SWEET WINE

We were talking poetry
over a sweet sweet bottle of wine
the other night
You had a lot of precious things to say
about the rise and the decline
of the far right

“That’s the way things go”
No. Just the way they they’ve been.
And something’s got to give
Something bound to burst
and all your pretty words
are never gonna fool the universe

Don’t you wanna know?
Don’t you wanna hear?
Don’t you wanna know what’s going on here?

Well I saw you pass a picket line
without bothering to think or wonder why
but it’s so hard to understand
and so much easier to drink your
sweet sweet wine

“That’s the way things go”
No. Just the way they they’ve been.
And something’s got to give
Something bound to burst
and all your pretty words
are never gonna fool the universe

Don’t you wanna know?
Don’t you wanna hear?
Don’t you wanna know what’s going on here?
